This Black & Decker toaster oven is a convection oven. Studies show that convection ovens cook up to 30% faster than standard ovens. Yet, Consumer Reports notes that convection fans did not make a significant difference when compared to standard toaster ovens (without convection fan). Still, convection has become an increasingly common feature to see in larger capacity toaster ovens.
The Black & Decker toaster oven can accommodate 6 slices of toast at once. You have plenty of room to reheat leftovers or bake a small batch of cookies. There’s a bump-out in the back to accommodate a 12″ pizza. The interior allows multiple rack positions to move the food closer or further from the heating elements. Black & Decker includes a baking pan. (Dimensions: 22.8 x 13.4 x 15.5 Inches; 1500 Watts)
The Black and Decker toaster oven cooks well, evenly, & efficiently.
Black & Decker includes a variety of preset buttons in this model. Presets include: bake, broil, toast, bagel, pizza, frozen snacks, potatoes, cookies. It contains a digital timer that can be set for a maximum of two hours.
Not all toaster ovens have interior lights and it’s a nice feature that Black & Decker includes in this model. You won’t have to remove your pizza from the oven to see if the cheese is melted – just turn on the light and look through the glass.
The interior of the Black & Decker has a nonstick coating. It also has a front removable crumb tray for easy cleaning
Large Digital Display
The display is large and designed to function at the touch of a button. However, numerous reviews complained about the function and durability of the digital display. Labels on the buttons wear out quickly and at times the touch buttons themselves can stop working with wear.
Additional reviews note that the controls can be complicated to operate. You’ll need to press multiple buttons in a specific sequence within a time limit. These controls might be challenging for older generations to understand and difficult for slower folks to operate.
NOTE: Despite the appearance in the photos – the LCD screen is NOT backlit. This makes the digital screen slightly difficult to read. The timer that does sound to signal the end of cooking is very soft, if you aren’t paying attention, you won’t notice it.
Limitations of the Black and Decker Toaster
Unfortunately, despite its popularity, the Black and Decker toaster oven did have some negative reviews that need to be mentioned.
Although no safety concerns were noted by Consumer Reviews, some concerns were reported by reviewers:
- Some users report excessive heat issues in the casing of the toaster oven which may indicate a possible a safety hazard.
- Fires have been reported by reviewers.
One of the most common complaints is the design flaw with the toaster oven door. Caution needs to be used when opening. Because the Black and Decker oven door does not contain a spring mechanism, the door slams/crashes into the countertop when opened.
There is also no auto-extending rack. Users need to reach into a hot oven to retrieve their items. Be careful if you try to slide the rack forward, there’s no stopper holding the rack in the oven – it’s fairly easy to pull it clear out of the oven.
Don’t hope for guidance from the manual – it’s reported to be “useless”.
If you have your heart set on a Black & Decker toaster, then despite its limitations, this model is the best choice. This Black & Decker countertop convection toaster oven does a good job for a great price.
