Toaster Oven Buying Guide for 2017

toaster oven buying guideSelection Process

We scoured thousands of toaster reviews; we sorted through hundreds of toaster oven lists, and we watched way too many videos ranting and raving about small appliances. We saved you the frustration and the trouble by compiling all that data into one easy-to-read chart.

Read beyond the chart to find comprehensive details about the pros and cons of each toaster oven model that we included on our top five list.  Each high-quality toaster model has undergone a comprehensive assessment to meet safety, durability, and customer satisfaction requirements including reviews by Consumer Reports (subscription required).

Is the best toaster oven a convection oven?

Four out of five of the toaster ovens that made the list of top toasters are convection ovens.

Does this mean that mean that convection ovens are always best?
Not necessarily. However, the convection feature has become a very common feature to see in a toaster oven.

Large capacity toaster oven models tend to include the convection feature more readily than in their smaller counterparts. The top five toaster ovens are larger capacity models from five different manufacturers.

What is a convection oven?

A convection oven is a high-quality oven that contains a high-temperature fan unit. Convection toaster ovens are small countertop convection ovens. The fan unit continually circulates the air within the oven moving it over the food. This results in a toaster oven that cooks more evenly, quickly, and at lower temperatures, thus reducing energy consumption.

The Benefits of Using a Toaster oven

  • Saves Time – Using a toaster oven saves time. Toaster ovens preheat more quickly than traditional ovens. A high-quality toaster oven cooks food faster.
  • Saves Energy – Toaster ovens use half the wattage of a standard oven. Because of their smaller side, toaster ovens also heat up more quickly than a large standard oven which decreases energy consumption.
  • Less Heat Output – Even though toaster ovens cook more quickly, they give out less heat than traditional standard ovens. Your tiny toaster won’t heat the entire kitchen. This makes toaster ovens ideal for using during warm weather.
  • Easy & Convenient – Most toaster ovens are easier and faster to operate than standard ovens. One convenience of a toaster oven is the ease of cleaning. Spills are much easier to clean up in a small toaster.
  • Saves Space – Toaster ovens are miniature versions of standard ovens. These tiny appliances hugely complement small spaces. If you have a tiny kitchen there’s a compact model out there that’s perfect for your limited countertop space.
  • Versatile – Toaster ovens have a variety of features and functions. Many toaster functions are similar to functions found in standard ovens. Popular toaster oven functions include defrost, warm, bake, roast, broil, and toast.
  • Safety – Using a toaster avoids potential gas or carbon monoxide fumes that might escape from a standard gas oven. However, like all electric appliances, toaster ovens can cause fires. Care must be exercised to care for your toaster oven properly, according to the manufacturer’s directions.

Are Toaster Ovens More Energy-Efficient Than Standard Ovens?

Yes – Toaster ovens are significantly smaller than a standard oven so they pre-heat more quickly and evenly (or even instantly, if talking about the Panasonic Flash Xpress). Toaster ovens save energy by concentrating the heat into a smaller area than a regular oven.

Do Toaster Ovens Cook Faster Than Standard Ovens?

Yes, toaster ovens cook faster than standard ovens because of the smaller interior. In a toaster oven, the heat is more concentrated on the food rather than escaping into a larger space.
You can expect a toaster oven to cook several minutes faster than a standard conventional oven If your toaster oven is a convection oven, your food may cook even faster. Full-size convection ovens can reduce cooking time by 30% compared to standard ovens.

However, it should be noted that Consumer Reports specifies that a convection feature won’t make a dramatic difference in the smaller spaced toaster oven.

Nonetheless, because convection is now a common feature in large capacity toaster ovens, four of the five toasters on our list happen to be convection toaster ovens. Even though, convection was not required criteria for inclusion in the list.

The Panasonic Flash Xpress isn’t a convection oven, but it makes bold claims of reducing cooking time by up to 40% from a standard oven with their innovative infrared cooking technology. (Note: Many reviewers were surprised at the speed of the Flash Xpress, yet many also report 40% as an exaggeration).

Why do convection ovens cook faster than conventional ovens?

When you press the preheat button on your standard conventional oven, a heating element turns on at the top or bottom of the oven (sometimes both). This heating element slowly heats the entire large oven. Because of the large interior and distance between heating elements, Standard ovens are rarely a uniform temperature throughout the entire oven.

In addition to multiple heating elements (The Breville Smart Pro has five!), convection ovens also have a high-temperature fan unit which continually circulates warm air throughout the oven. This air current from the convection fan keeps the oven temperature more consistent than a standard conventional oven.

This video explains exactly how a convection oven works vs a conventional oven:

Tips for Using Your Toaster Oven

  • Test your toaster oven immediately: Don’t wait until you need it. Every now and then a lemon is shipped – make sure the oven you purchase is in good working condition. Test it as soon as you receive it.
  • Explore your toaster oven: Read the manual, know which parts are removable and how to reassemble properly.
  • Clean your toaster before its first use: Wipe down your toaster oven before the first use to rid packing and manufacturing residue.
  • Keep your toaster oven clean: Accumulation of crumbs and food spills on or around heating elements is a fire hazard. Clean your toaster oven properly after every use.
  • Unplug an unused toaster: When you aren’t actively using it, your toaster oven should be unplugged.

How to choose the best toaster oven for you

What Type of Toaster Oven Should I Get?

The type of toaster you choose should be determined by what types of food and how much of food you plan to cook.

Types of Toaster Ovens:

Pop-up Toaster

The classic traditional toaster (that was surprisingly invented after the conventional toaster oven) makes the best toast.

What you can cook in a pop-up toaster.

If all you’re cooking is toast – a pop-up toaster is probably all you need. Some of these small electric appliances also have a bagel setting.

Conventional Toaster Oven

A tiny traditional electric oven. One to two heating elements on the top or bottom. Power it on and the conventional toaster oven will slowly heat up. Similar to a standard conventional oven, the conventional toaster oven may vary in temperature throughout the space and subsequently result in less even cooking.

What you can cook in a conventional toaster oven.

If you want to toast a bagel, and bake frozen pizza, then a conventional toaster oven might be a suitable option.

Convection Toaster Oven

The convection toaster oven has multiple heating elements distributed throughout the interior. Additionally, convection toaster ovens have a high-temperature fan unit that distributes heated air throughout the inside of the toaster. In theory (and according to many reviews), the convection feature in a toaster oven results in more even cooking and a reduction in cooking time.

Consumer Reports states that while convection makes a significant difference in a standard oven, adding the convection feature to a toaster oven does not have a significant impact. They maintain that the smaller size of a toaster oven renders the convection feature unnecessary.

Still, consumers are clamoring for convection ovens and manufacturers have heeded their call. Convection has become an extremely common feature in the best toaster ovens. Perhaps due to their larger interior capacity.
Four out of the five toaster ovens on the list of best toaster ovens happen to be convection toaster ovens.

What you can cook in a convection toaster oven.

The convection toaster oven can completely replace standard ovens in many households.
Anything you can make in a standard oven, you can make in a convection toaster oven (size appropriate). You can roast a chicken and bake a cake in many convection toaster ovens. Of course, you can also make toast.

Infrared Toaster Oven

This electric toaster oven is different than the other types of toasters on our list.  The infrared toaster is powered by infrared lights combined with traditional quartz heating elements.  Number 3 on our list of best toasters, The Panasonic Flash Xpress is an infrared toaster oven. This toaster oven can do most of the things a conventional toaster oven can do, but it does have limitations. Unlike many convection toaster ovens, you cannot roast chicken in an infrared toaster oven.

What you can cook in an infrared toaster oven.

If you want to reheat pizza, make toast, and cook frozen meals with cutting edge technology, then an instant infrared toaster could be perfect for you.

We've assessed thousands of toaster oven models to determine the best units. These models are the absolute best toaster ovens you can buy right now. There's a pretty wide price range depending on exactly what your looking for, but we've provided detailed reviews of each of the top models.

What’s the Best Size for a Toaster Oven?

The size of the toaster oven you choose depends on they type and how much food you plan to cook in it.  If all you plan to do is reheat occasional leftovers and make toast – you probably don’t need a large capacity unit.

However, if you want to cook a 12” pizza, bake cookies, and roast a whole chicken – you need a large capacity model.  In many homes, large capacity toaster ovens have replaced the daily use of a standard oven.

Helpful Features to Look for in Toaster Ovens

These are the features you’ll come across while searching for the perfect toaster,

Control Style of Digital vs. Dials – Digital buttons break and wear out more quickly than dials and knobs.

Settings & Presets – Nowadays, ovens often come with a variety of preprogrammed settings and functions. Common presets include toast, bake, roast, defrost, broil, etc. Some toaster ovens have presets for things like pizza and cookies. The Panasonic Flash Xpress even has a very specific (if not slightly odd) “hash brown” button.

Wattage – A toaster oven uses between 1000 -1800 watts. An 1800 small appliance needs a dedicated circuit while in use. If you try to run a blender and an 1800 watt oven on the same circuit, you’ll blow the fuse.

Automatic Shut-Off – Most ovens have an auto-shut-off, but not all. This is an extremely important safety feature to prevent fires.

Auto-extending interior rack – This is a rack that automatically extends when the oven door is opened (the rack is somehow connected to the door via hook or magnet). This is not a required feature but one you might miss if you purchased one of these small appliances without it.

Toast Shade Selector – Shade selectors are fairly standard features on toasters now. However, if you’re an avid toast lover – before buying your new toaster oven, make certain your toaster has a shade selector. Toast connoisseurs will miss this feature should they accidentally buy a toaster oven without it.

Bagel Setting – The bagel setting cooks only one side of the bread. The bagel setting is ideas if you want to toast thick slices of bread or bagels in your toaster oven.

Bake – The bake feature is standard on most toaster ovens. The “bake” setting maintains the internal temperature of the toaster oven consistently throughout the cooking process. The desired temperature is input by the toaster oven user.

Roast – The roast setting typically heats at a higher temperature in the beginning of the roast cycle. During this initial high-temperature cooking time, the outside of the food is seared and juices are trapped inside. Potato skins stay crisp – chicken breasts stay juicer.

Convection – The convection setting is an increasingly common feature seen in toaster ovens – especially those with a larger interior capacity. The high-temp fan unit continually circulates the heated air within the toaster oven.

Broil – The boil setting turns on the top heating elements of the toaster oven (leaving the bottom and/or side heating elements off). The broil setting is ideal for melting cheese or preparing an open faced sandwich. Broiling in a toaster oven is an excellent alternative to grilling. Broiling steaks or fish is easy and convenient in a high-quality toaster oven.

Reheat – The reheat setting will warm your food throughout with a consistent temperature without browning the outside of the food. An excellent feature for heating up leftovers.

Warm – The warm setting maintains a low consistent heat throughout the toaster oven. It doesn’t cook the food but is the perfect for keeping side dishes warm while finishing prep on the main course.

Plate Warmer – Some toaster ovens are designed with a top that functions as a plate warmer. A great feature for many. (Although if you require above toaster oven storage – you may abhor this feature.)

Interior Light – This is an excellent feature that’s not available in many models. An interior light allows you to visually judge the food without moving the food closer to a light source (to achieve a more accurate inspection).

In case you were wondering….

What’s the difference between bake and roast?

The biggest difference between roast and bake is what type of food you are cooking.

The bake setting is used to cook foods that do not have stable constitution – things like cake batter, cookie dough to cookies, or bread dough are baked. The constitution of the food changes during the cooking process. Bread dough becomes a delicious loaf of warm crusty bread.

The roast setting is most often used for foods that already have a stable constitution but need to be cooked. Things like vegetables and meats are roasted.

Conclusion

There are thousands of models of toaster ovens currently on the market.  Finding the right one for you can be challenging.  If you’re searching for the perfect toaster oven for you – GreatToasters.com can help you find it.
